D2 Center UNO Service Learning Academy Project, Fall 2021

In Fall 2021, the D2 Center participated in a UNO Service Learning Academy (SLA) project, partnering with UNO students in Kersten Borer’s Social Work and Civic Engagement class and Omaha South High students in Amy Cerra’s advanced pottery class. The previous summer, during an SLA brainstorming meeting for UNO faculty, local P-12 faculty, and community agencies, Professor Borer had the idea for a staff appreciation project for D2 Center YANs. This project would combine professional development opportunities created by UNO students for D2 Center staff, and also deepen the understanding of the day-to-day hurdles facing D2 Center YANs as they connect with their students.

New D2 Center Elective Credit Record Set

Congratulations to D2 Center Staff Specialist and teacher Jodie Martinez (pictured below) and her students. In the 2021-22 school year, 15 D2 Center students earned 18 elective credits which is a new record! Although the D2 Center focus has always been supporting students with academic progress in their regular school courses, the D2 Center has offered two or three elective credit classes each year since the summer of 2011. The D2 Center classes emphasize English skills, math skills, health and wellness, and postsecondary preparation. D2 Center summer elective classes started on June 2 and will continue through July 22. D2 Center staff participated in the Community Resource Fair for young adults at Fontenelle Park Pavilion along with more than 25 nonprofits, community agencies, educational institutions, and employers. Organizations shared info ranging from education and housing to health care and legal services.

D2 Center 2022 Summer Elective Classes

May is here and it’s time to start thinking about summer! Every year the D2 Center offers options for students who are in need of elective credits. These courses are designed to complement OPS summer school opportunities and are taught by Nebraska certified teachers. Once again this year classes are virtual, other than the the first session where students are required to pick up class materials in-person at the D2 Center. See below for details!
